Do You Want Curls With That?: The History of Hair Perm Treatment and How It Works

Filed under: Beauty Within — admin at 6:31 pm on Sunday, May 4, 2008

Hair treatments have been used all through out history by women and men alike to enhance their appearances. Once of the most famous hair treatment that is still used up until today is the perm treatment.

When a perm treatment is done on a person’s hair, curls are created in the hair shaft. These curls appear as a result of the alteration of the hair’s chemical structure.

Due to the use of chemical treatments, the curls made from a perm treatment last longer than those curls made by heating or styling by curlers. The curls made from this treatment cannot be destroyed unless by another chemical treatment is done on the person’s hair.

The perm treatment has gone far back in history. Women of Ancient Egypt used to put on a concoction of soil and water to their hair. Afterwards, they set their hair using primitive curlers made out of wood and bask under the sun to supply heat to their hair.

After the hair dryer was invented, setting lotions were then used to replace the “mud treatment” that the Egyptian women introduced. However, these setting lotions did not provide lasting results to women who desired to replace their straight hair with curls.

Permanent waves then became available in the market in 1920. This type of perm treatment used electrical devices (instead of the sun) to generate heat into the hair.

But since most heating devices do not have thermostats back then, the amount of heat that flows into the hair was not regulated. Thus, these harsh early perm treatments led the hair to dry. The end results were frizzy curls that were unmanageable and difficult to maintain.

The cold wave was then introduced in the 1940s. The cold wave is basically what the modern perm treatment is today. Since the heat used in a cold wave can easily be regulated, the hair can now be curled closer to the scalp using this treatment.

In a perm treatment, hair is washed and wound to curlers or curling rods to set. The perm lotion is then applied to the hair as it is still set in curlers.

The perm lotion is responsible for breaking the bonds of the hair that keeps it in shape. Since hair and the perm lotion have different pH levels, it makes the hair react to the perm lotion once it is applied.

The perm lotion opens up the cuticles of the hair as it enters its cortex. It is in the cortex where the disulphide bonds that are capable for shaping the hair can be found. Once the perm lotion reacts with these bonds, the bonds loosen and take the shape of hair while it is set in curlers.

After applying the perm lotion, the hair is then placed under regulated heat to help soften and loosen the bonds that keep it in shape.

After rinsing the perm lotion from the hair, a neutralizing lotion is applied. In this part of the treatment, the neutralizing lotion enables the links that were broken by the perm lotion to reform. The hair then hardens and retains its curly shape.

This stage of the perm treatment however can cause irritation and damage to the hair shaft if not executed properly. If the neutralizing is not done properly, the bonds of the hair may not harden enough for it to stand breakage and damaging. Also, the neutralizing lotion can irritate the scalp if not rinsed thoroughly.

After the perm treatment, it is advisable for the client to not shampoo his or her hair for a few days. The shampoo may interrupt the “curing” process of the treatment. The curls may not appear as expected if the client eagerly shampoos his or her hair after the treatment.

On the other hand, it is advisable to often condition newly permed hair to prevent it from being damaged.

A perm treatment is a good way to give volume and body to a person’s hair. However, one must take into consideration that different people have different hair types. Thus, a perm treatment, or any hair treatment for that matter, can yield different results for different people.

If one is interested in getting any treatment for their hair, they should take in mind to find a hairstylist that they trust. They must also fully understand the type of treatment and what it does to their hair.

Besides, anyone would not want to do anything damaging to their hair. As the saying goes, “The hair is your crowning glory”.

Acne Scar Solutions

Filed under: Beauty Within — admin at 3:59 pm on Thursday, May 1, 2008

Acne is a common skin infection that affects over 80% of youth and 5% of adults. When acne eventually heals, it leaves ugly blemishes called acne scars. These become permanent if they are not treated in time. Acne scars are damaging to the ego and personality of an individual, and a lot of time and money has been invested in research to treat this problem.

Acne scars are classified by size, shape and appearance they are identified as Icepick, Boxcar and Rolling. They are also tagged as early or permanent on the basis of their duration. Early scars respond well to topical medications. Permanent scars require surgical intervention. Presently, scars are treated with combinations of topical skin care medications in tandem with carefully selected surgical and skin resurfacing procedures.

At least a half dozen surgical procedures are also performed to repair acne scars. Each has benefits and pitfalls and a surgeon will closely examine the patient’s age, sex, medical history, skin type and type of scarring before agreeing to perform surgery. Cost is also discussed, as it can be quite expensive.

When dermal fillers are used, a surgeon will inject fillers such as collagen and hyaluronic acid derivatives into the skin. This raises the base of the scar to the level of normal skin. The “punch excision” procedure is used in

icepick and boxcar type scars and relies on making incisions in the skin with a punch biopsy tool and stitching the skin edges together. The new scar heals, leaving a clear skin. Punch excision with skin graft replacement is a variant of the punch excision method. Instead of suturing the skin after excision, surgeons use a skin graft to repair the scar. Punch elevation is used on deep boxcar scars that have sharp edges and normal appearing bases. Here the base of the scar is excised and elevated to the surface of the skin. Sutures and glue are used to join the edges together. Subcutaneous Incision is used for treating rolling scars and centers on the use of a special beveled needle that is inserted under the skin and used to cut the binding tissue in the scar. The resulting bruises fade after about 1 week. Laser resurfacing is used to burn the top layer of the skin and reduce it to the same level as the base of the scars.

Prevention is always better than cure. Simple precautions such as avoiding strong sunlight, using medications like tretinoin and alpha hydroxyl acids, avoiding picking scabs, regular exercising and dietary control go a long way in preventing acne scars and saving a lot of embarrassment and expenses.

Blinded by the White?

Filed under: Beauty Within — admin at 10:08 pm on Monday, April 14, 2008

Washington DCBy J. S. RonnettePatients traveling the road toward whiter teeth have a dizzying array of options to choose from. There are so many whitening products and treatments out there that some dental consumers get blinded in the glare of choices. From paint-on bleaching gels to stick-on whitening strips to in-office power bleachingwhat’s a white-smile-seeker to do?

The current methods break down into whitening at home and at the dental office, with a growing interest in whitening at the dentist’s office. “Many of our patients are busy professionals, and they would rather come in for a one-visit power bleaching session to get the job done right away,” says Dr. Daniel J. Deutsch, of the Washington Center for Dentistry. And many patients are not new to the world of whitening, having already tried over-the-counter techniques.

Home teeth whitening

The brush-on method sounds wonderfully easy and unobtrusive. Just brush on the bleaching gel before you go to sleep. Let it sit on your teeth all night long and brush it off with your toothbrush the next morning.

Also considered the Lazy-Man’s whitening system, this method contains inherent flaws. The most obvious drawback is that once saliva “wets” the gel on the teeth, the bleach gets diluted and rubs off in some areas. This situation lowers the chance for an even whitening result. And no one wants that blotchy, partially bleached look!

And many of these at-home formulas contain glycerin, which is known to deplete moisture in the enamel of the teeth. This condition often leads to discomfort from sensitivity during the whitening process.

The stick-on strips method is popular because they are simple to use. They are easy to apply and need no preparation.

But, again, the short-cut approach gives skimpy results. Here’s why: The upper and lower strips get pressed against the outer front surface of the teeth. And while they adhere pretty well, the strips cannot fit completely within the cracks and grooves that occur along the contour of your teeth. The recesses between each tooth might possibly retain their darker staining, and even might look darker against the newly bleached flatter areas. Eventually, as the whitening process progresses, teeth might appear to have undesirable, pronounced gaps between them.

In addition, these methods often use bleach at a lower concentration (6 to 10 percent), which is less effective than bleach supplied by many dental offices.

The trays and bleaching gel method remains the most successful and efficient home whitening treatment.

A special form-fitting, soft plastic tray is made from a mold of your mouth. The tray fits snugly over each tooth. The dentist also supplies a higher concentration (16 to 22 percent) bleaching gel.

Patients wear the trays and gel for a certain period of time every day for a specific number of daysas prescribed by the dentist.

This method gets good results for patients amenable to wearing trays and gel either a few hours in the evening - or while they sleep.

In-office Whitening - Britesmile
The one-hour power bleaching method is fast becoming the option of choice for patients seeking great results - fast!

This in-office treatmentknown as Britesmilegets high marks for quick, comfortable, easy whitening at lightning speeds.

“The Britesmile chair is often the first stop for patients getting a full smile makeover,” says Dr. Marc Doctors, also of the Washington Center for Dentistry. “They want to match their new crowns and veneers to teeth that are as white as they can get.”

The Britesmile system lightens teeth up to nine shades whiter, on average, with no harm to tooth enamel, gums or existing fillings. Teeth reach their optimum natural whiteness and reveal a smile that many patients haven’t seen in years.

The one-visit session goes like this: After examining teeth and gums, pre-whitening toothpaste is applied with a hygienist’s polisher to prepare teeth for the whitening session.

The current shade of the teeth is measured. A before photo is taken. Then, the technician protects the gums and mouth with special materials and applies the whitening gel.

Many patients relax with movies or music while a gentle blue light shines on their teeth to activate the whitening gel. The technician reapplies the gel every 20 minutesthree times during the one-hour session.

When the sessions are complete, the new shade is noted and an “after” photo records the new brighter smile for posterity.

How long does it last? Long-term results depend on the patient. Tobacco, coffee, tea, dark soft drinks and lax attention to dental care can work against the results. Regular professional care will help maintain a new “Britesmile” up to two years. Some patients maintain results at home with trays and gel.

A Guide To Balding Men’s Hairstyles

Filed under: Beauty Within — admin at 4:36 pm on Monday, April 7, 2008

It’s unbelievable how difficult it is to find any decent information on the internet about balding men’s hairstyles.

You’ll know this yourself if you’ve ever tried to do a search on Google for ‘balding men’s hairstyles’, ‘hairstyles for balding men’, ‘balding hairstyles’ or any other amount of variations on the theme.

This is surprising considering how many balding men there are who deserve a decent hairstyle as much as any one else…

So… faced with this injustice I’ve put together my own guide to balding men’s hairstyles…

It’s a fact that 95% of all balding or bald men suffer from male pattern baldness. Male pattern baldness usually starts with a receding hairline at the front and is frequently accompanied with thinning at the top.

Over time, this thinning turns into a full fledged bald spot, and the bald spot grows to cover the head, apart from the sides and around the back.

Regardless of this, as long as there is a single hair left on my head I’ll still demand a stylish coiffure. So, what balding hairstyle options are available?

The worst balding men’s hairstyle is the comb over. This is the classic look beloved of men of a certain age whereby the hair is grown longer on one side of the head and ‘combed over’ the bald area to the other side.

This strategy only spells disaster even in the slightest of breezes and is to be avoided at all costs.

But assuming you already know this, what are the other do’s and don’ts to balding men’s hairstyles?

The first common mistake is combing the hair straight back. This may cover bald spots, but it only exposes the forehead and draws attention to the receding hairline.

The second is growing your hair longer at the back to make up for what’s lacking on top. This unbalances the head and draws even more attention to the scalp and the baldness.

Younger men with thinning hair might be tempted to use gel… but this isn’t recommended. Gel clumps your hair together and reveals the scalp.

Likewise, growing your hair long in an attempt to cover up actually causes hair to separate and show more scalp.

So, what are the do’s?

Get more natural looking fluff to your hair by using mousses and conditioners.

Grow your remaining hair by a few inches, get it layered and brush it forward to break up the receding hairline.

If your hairline isn’t receding too badly, but the top of your head is thinning, you can get away with keeping the front long and combing your hair straight back to cover the bald spot.

Eventually however, your bald spot will expand.

The ultimate balding men’s hairstyle when faced with a shiny bald dome, is to go the whole hog and shave it off or at least a very close trim.

You’ll probably be amazed at people’s reactions and the compliments you’ll get - the shaved look is a totally acceptable balding hairstyle these days.

Start with electric clippers like you find in the barbers. After you’ve clipped the heavy stuff, lather up with shaving gel. This gives you a closer, smoother shave than shaving cream.

Then using a razor, start at the top and shave down with the grain taking care at the back - it’s recommended to watch what you’re doing with a small mirror.

Shaving your head only takes a few minutes and you don’t need to do it every day (two to three times a week is fine).

Taking care of your new shaved head is much like taking care of your face. Wash regularly with moisturizing soap, rather than a harsh deodorant soap that can dry out the skin on your head.

Also use a good quality moisturizer after every wash - cheaper moisturizers will just clog up your pores.

For the summer, find a moisturizer with a sun protection factor of at least 15 to avoid sunburn on your head. And you’ll need a warm hat in winter to maintain your body heat.

If shaving doesn’t tickle your fancy then you can always opt for a hairpiece as a last resort - though I wouldn’t recommend it :-)

10 Home Remedies for Acne

Filed under: Beauty Within — admin at 10:57 am on Thursday, April 3, 2008

Acne - a skin condition nobody really wants but almost everyone gets at one point in their lives. How to say sayonara forever? Unfortunately, this is the challenge.

At present, there remains no surefire way to get rid of acne. While there are many remedies in the market that claim to zap your zit problems away in a heartbeat, their effects differ from person to person. If you have mild acne, over the counter remedies could work well with you. But if you have a severe face issue, you might want to consult a dermatologist directly. Either way, you will have to spend on medication.

If your acne is not as bad and you feel that you can muster home remedy trial and error, here are some of the acne remedies most people swear by: (But, hey, always keep in mind that different strokes respond to different folks, so these are definitely NOT carved in stone.)

1) Squeeze the juice out of a lemon and mix it with the same amount of rose water. Dab the mixture onto your face and let it sit there for at least 30 minutes, after which you’ll need to wash your face with fresh water. Do this for 15 consecutive days and you’ll see that your pimples and acne have noticeably reduced and the scars have started to fade.

2) Use Nettle Tea. Nettle tea contains some curing element that works its magic on basic skin problems. Four cups a day should do the trick.

3) For those annoying acne lesions, try applying aloe vera extract to you face twice a day.

4) Toothpaste can also be a great instant acne remedy. Dab a little on your zit before going to bed and your pimple should be noticeably smaller when you wake up. Just make sure you use the paste, and not the gel, formula.

5) One of the more popular acne home remedies is fresh mint juice. Apply it all over your face and let it stay there overnight.

6) Here’s a smelly acne home remedy: crushed garlic cloves. Dab them on your face once or twice a day.

7) Honey with cinnamon power. Mix up a paste using one teaspon of cinnamon power and 3 tablespoons of honey. Put it on your face before you go to bed and rinse it off as soon as you wake up using warm water. Two weeks of doing this will help make your pimples go away for a considerable period (or, if you’re lucky, forever!).

8) Wash your face clean with water and then dab your pimples with cotton balls that have been previously soaked in vinegar.

9) To thoroughly cleanse your face and pores, use either an almond or oatmeal mask. Mis either with rose water, enough to turn it into a paste and spread on your skin, paying special attention to your problem areas. Let them stay and dry for around 15 minutes and then rinse them off with cold water. This will help you get rid of those annoying blackheads and whiteheads.

10) Mash tomatoes to a pulp and apply them on your pimples and acne. Leave them on for about one hour and then wash them off.

There are many more acne home remedies around, and if you’re creative and resourceful, you might even be able to conjure one up yourself. When working with home acne remedies, though, always keep in mind that it’s still always best to consult a professional about your skin problems. Because when all else fails, you’ll definitely be forced to see a dermatologist (and you might end up paying more).

But, hey, if it works for you, then, by all means, keep doing it.
