Choosing Your Bariatric Surgery Location

Filed under: Health Hub, Medical Center — admin at 3:20 pm on Monday, May 19, 2008

Bariatric surgery in the United States and become very costly. So why not turn abroad? There are many other countries that you can receive bariatric surgery, but it seems the most popular is Mexico. One of the leading reasons many people from the United States turn to Mexico for the surgery is because of the price difference. The surgery is a lot cheaper in Mexico than in the United States. So why not you may ask?

Cost is not the only thing that one should take into consideration when thinking about going to Mexico for surgery. You should find all the information that you can about the surgeons and facilities that the surgeries are performed in. Many times the surgeries are performed in clinics instead of hospitals. There is nothing wrong with clinics. Most of the time clinics have a safe and effective way of doing things, but you may want more than that. In a hospital, you will have a pre-op room, surgery room, recovery room, intensive care unit if needed, so it’s better to choose a hospital. A hospital would be a safer place for a surgery to be performed.

Be sure to research your surgeon thoroughly. Make sure the surgeon is certified to do the procedure you are wanting performed. It would be recommended to set up a time for a phone conference or to meet the surgeon and staff in person before the time of your surgery. And I’m not talking about setting up your surgery, flying to Mexico, and meeting them the day before your surgery. I mean before your surgery is even scheduled. This will give you a good outlook.

Don’t let cost be the only reason you choose Mexico for your bariatric procedure. Of course, the surgeons are well known in Mexico and have successful backgrounds with bariatric surgery. Always do your research!

Weight Loss - Make a significant and lasting lifestyle change.

By Angie Kocsi

Losing weight can make a significant and life altering change in
how we live our everyday life. After losing weight many people
experience better sleep patterns, increased energy levels,
improved blood pressure and cholesterol levels. There is a
renewed vitality and self confidence that improves life in
general and health in particuliar that cannot be overlooked.
However, statistics show that 90% of people who undergo a weight
loss programme regain the weight within two years. Why? One
reason is that most diets are unrealistic and simply cannot be
maintained in the long term. They almost always set you up for
failure because they do not take into account real life -
stress, eating out, a hectic job, cooking for the whole family
or the many other temptations that are all around us every day.
We constantly feel like we are fighting a losing battle!

The second major reason that most diets don’t work is that they
don’t really address the emotional and spiritual elements. Food
that is meant to nourish and strengthen the body becomes
something we fear and leaves us feeling deprived. Or it can
become a poor coping mechanism for stress, tiredness, anxiety,
sadness, boredom or other emotions and feelings. Don’t despair;
there are sensible and practical solutions available to help us
cope with the weight loss dilemma.

Have you noticed how active people seem to be more satisfied
with their physical appearance and weight? A few simple
activities added to your daily routine can have a positive
impact on overall health, fitness and quality of life:

1.Begin a 5 minute stretching routine each morning 2.Take a 10 -
15 minute brisk walk each day 3.Walk whenever possible - instead
of using the elevator, car, bus or train

Exercising on a regular basis speeds up metabolism, burns
calories and distributes the weight loss evenly throughout the
body. Muscle and join pain will be less severe and your mobility
and flexibility will be greatly enhanced.

In order to stay motivated and keep on-track, working with a
fitness and nutrition professional who understands that weight
loss is a journey towards health and wellness for each
individual will help. They can design a balanced program that
offers the right combination of diet and exercise to suit your
particular requirements and help you to succeed in your goals
and inspire you towards a lifestyle full of vitality. So stay
focused and most of all look for improvement long term not
overnight!

Fast Weight Loss Takes Time

Filed under: Medical Center — admin at 12:24 pm on Sunday, May 4, 2008

I recently received the following email:

Q. Five weeks ago, I began an exercise program and so far I have not lost any weight or gained in muscle tone, which is my goal. Regardless, I intend to keep it up, knowing that the results I want will occur if I give it time.

A. Yes, your results will occur if given enough time. Just stay the course. Be consistent and you’ll get there. Luckily she was not upset about the lack of progress on her bathroom scale but most people aren’t so willing to take that time.

Typical Dieter Losing Weight with Exercise: Ms. Too Tight Pants Decides to Drop a Dress Size

1. She starts out feeling excited, knowing she’ll lose the weight she wants in the long run, if she can stay with it. (She’s read the books. She knows this eating better and exercising more works).

2. She starts feeling better right away, although the scale shows no difference. (Results take awhile to build, and she knows this but it gets harder and harder to wait.)

3. Her clothes begin to fit looser. People start to notice, asking “Hey you’re looking good. What are you doing?” (Things are starting to happen, but not very quickly).

4. She does “all the right things,” such as eating well and getting good rest. She’s tracking what she’s eating and keeping a journal. It’s all going great. (Consistency is the secret and a very good discipline).

5. Since she’s been “so good” she decides to step on the scale. She’s even got rewards in mind depending on how much she’s lost. (Where’s the evidence? She’s getting impatient and wants to know this is working).

6. Alas! The scale shows a three pound weight gain and she throws her hands up in despair saying, “This doesn’t work! I quit!” (The scale doesn’t show us what is going on inside, it only weighs the total package. Maybe she just finished drinking 16 ounces of water, that’s a pound right there).

7. She dismisses the real evidence (how she feel better and looks better; how she’s been getting compliments; how her clothes fit better and some are getting too lose to wear) and she decides instead to rely of the wisdom of the bathroom scale. That piece of metal sitting on the bathroom floor, known for wildly inaccurate results, but nevertheless trusted as the ultimate authority.

She may have even started to gain some valuable active muscle tissue that supports and sustains the body, creates beautiful curves, and burns calories in the process, but without the result she wanted to see on her scale, she’s quit.

Your body is made up of fat, skin, bone and muscle (plus water). When you exercise the goal is to increase the muscle and decrease the fat. A pound of muscle takes up much less space than a pound of fat, so regardless of what number you see on the bathroom scale, if you have been exercising, you are building a better, healthier frame.

Give your body a chance to display the results you seek. Rely on the evidence you see in how your clothes fit for instance. If you’re losing inches, but the scale hasn’t shown a change just wait. The scale will catch up soon enough. If you’ve gotten on the path to better health and weight loss, stay the course. Fast weight loss takes time.

Mesothelioma: Legal Ramifications

Filed under: Medical Center — admin at 5:11 am on Saturday, May 3, 2008

A Brief Overview

Mesothelioma is a form of cancer that attacks the linings of the lungs and the intestinal tract, and also the sac covering the heart. It is also called epithelial mesothelioma, as it affects the membrane in the pleura, the pericardium and the peritoneum. It is not lung-cancer per se. The mesothelioma-lung cancer confusion has been there earlier. Mesothelioma is merely a form of cancer that affects the lining covering the lungs. It comes in three forms:

• Pleural mesothelioma
• Peritoneal mesothelioma
• Pericardial mesothelioma

Causes of Mesothelioma

The primary cause of mesothelioma is exposure to asbestos. This can be direct exposure at the work place, or secondary exposure (when the victim is exposed to asbestos through coming in contact with someone who has already been exposed to asbestos). Despite all the pain and the loss that the workers faced, there was some hope in the form of legal recourse. Workers started suing the plants they worked in, and soon the legal battle against mesothelioma reached epic proportions. Even today, there are around 3,000 cases of mesothelioma being diagnosed in the United States every year. While the treatment is painful and not always successful, these mesothelioma victims at least have the hope of monetary compensation to help them fight mesothelioma.

The first manifestations of mesothelioma were seen as early as the 1950s and the 1960s. At that time, the workers in plants and other work areas that used asbestos in some form or the other were unaware of the lethal side of asbestos. The management at these work areas - docks, industrial plants, equipment manufacturers, and many more, the list is endless - soon came to know of the adverse effects of asbestos. However, for some reason they kept quiet about it. Their focus was on reduced costs and profits, it seems, and they remained mum about the harmful effects that asbestos could have on their workers. Asbestos, after all, had huge advantages over other material, which was why it was used so much irrespective of the genre of industry. This over the years proved to be a very, very costly error on their part.

Mesothelioma Litigation - Did it Help?

The implications of asbestos use are staggering, primarily because of the range of products it is used in. From office buildings to toasters to car brakes to shipyards, asbestos was used almost across the breadth of the industrial sector. A publication in 1935 by the American Journal of Cancer - Pulmonary Asbestosis: Carcinoma of the Lung in Asbesto-Silicosis - first raised the suspicions of people from the research and medical fields of the connection between the presence of asbestos and the unusually high death rates and lung-related diseases in the industrial sector. This connection was confirmed in 1955, and soon the continued use of asbestos despite knowing about its deadlier side became a legal nightmare for the industrial sector. Mesothelioma litigation in the United States has enabled mesothelioma victims win hundreds of thousands of dollars in lawsuits from their callous employers. It has been one of the successes in the battle against mesothelioma indirectly, and against the irresponsible attitudes of the management of workplaes that used asbestos, directly.

The Legal Aspect of Mesothelioma

Over the years, the legal benefits that mesothelioma victims have received have been enormous. The symptoms of mesothelioma manifest much after the initial inhalation of the asbestos fibers. Mesothelioma treatment is also painful and expensive. The compensations awarded to them have helped them at least cover their medical expenses. Nowadays there are mesothelioma law firms - law firms that specialize in mesothelioma. They have trained mesothelioma lawyers and mesothelioma attorneys. These lawyers specialize in mesothelioma compensation cases.

It can happen that a victim may shy away from legal recourse because they fel that they do not have adequate financial support to pay the lawyer. However, this is a scenario they need not worry about. All they have to do is contact a mesothelioma support group, or a mesothelioma help group. These are present all over the United States. The patient can also go online and put a search for mesothelioma legal assistance cells by typing mesothelioma and then typing the name of the state or area they are from in the search field of the search engine they are using. This is not a fixed rule - they can type it in any order. For example - mesothelioma California, mesothelioma Texas, mesothelioma lawyer texas, New York mesothelioma, California mesothelioma lawyer, etc.

How are Mesothelioma Lawyers so Successful?

One of the basic things in awarding compensation is for the judge or the jury to decide whether the harm done was intentional, or whether it was the result of a choice the victim made, in simple terms. In many cases, the circumstance of a victim is a result of a choice he or she made. For example, in a smoking-related cancer case, the choice to smoke was made by the victim. However, in the case of mesothelioma, the situation is different. The circumstance of mesothelioma in the victim could have been averted if only his employers had been more careful, had made him aware about the risks the job entailed, and then let him choose, besides providing him whatever protection required to prevent him from being exposed to asbestos. This is one area that mesothelioma lawyers and mesothelioma attorneys have been able to successfully work on.

After the initial slew of mesothelioma cases and lawsuits, now laws are firmly in place to safeguard the health interests of the worker. Besides, in the event of someone actually suffering from mesothelioma, there are some guidelines towards seeking legal redress for them as well. Mesothelioma law is strict and helps provide fair verdicts in mesothelioma-related compensation cases.

Guidelines for Mesothelioma Victims Seeking Legal Action

The primary rule of thumb while filing a mesothelioma lawsuit is that it has to be filed immediately on diagnosis of the disease. In fact, in many of the states across the United States, mesothelioma laws stipulating the timeframe within which a lawsuit can be filed are in place. On diagnosis, you can contact a mesothelioma lawyer through your local mesothelioma activists or mesothelioma group for more mesothelioma information relating to lawsuits. The work of a mesothelioma lawyer or mesothelioma attorney is not limited to just fighting your case. A mesothelioma attorney usually has an extensive network of contacts - other victims, mesothelioma case histories, good treatment facilities, nature of treatment options available, in fact, for most mesothelioma-related information. His specialization is a distinct advantage over a lawyer who doesn’t have too much of an idea about mesothelioma.

The government is also taking steps to ensure that workers are safe from exposure to asbestos. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has passed laws and regulations stipulating safety measures and also has set in motion plans to ban and phase out the use of asbestos as much as possible. You can find more information about this at the EPA website - www.epa.gov.

You can also browse the Internet for mesothelioma-related information, mesothelioma pictures, more information on asbestos, etc.

Are You Pre-Diabetic? Do Nuts Prevent Diabetes? Two Interesting Studies

Filed under: Medical Center — admin at 3:04 pm on Thursday, May 1, 2008

Should you be concerned about a high fasting blood sugar if you don’t have diabetes? A normal fasting blood sugar is defined as being below 100. Those who have fasting blood sugars between 100 and 125 are not necessarily diabetic, but carry five times the risk of suffering a heart attack in one year as those with fasting blood sugars below 100. At the 2005 American College of Cardiology meetings, Dr. Beer of France showed that people who have elevated fasting blood sugars are at high risk for heart attacks, even though they may not be diagnosed as being diabetic. Having high blood sugar levels may be an even greater risk or heart attacks than having a high cholesterol.

Many doctors now feel that 35 percent of Americans become diabetic because they eat too much sugar-added foods and drinks, bread, spaghetti and other refined carbohydrates and that they are overweight. Storing fat, particularly in your belly, puts you as high risk for becoming diabetic and for having a heart attack.

Does eating nuts will lower your risk for diabetes? In one study, risk for type 2 diabetes in women who ate nuts at least five times per week was 30 percent lower than those who rarely or never ate nuts. Nuts contain lots of fat, but most fats in nuts are monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, which are good for insulin sensitivity and serum cholesterol. Before the bad LDL cholesterol can damage arteries, it must first be converted to oxidized LDL. Mono-unsaturated fats form LDL cholesterol that resists oxidation and therefore protects arteries. Nuts are also rich in antioxidant vitamins, minerals, plant protein and dietary fiber. However, nuts are concentrated sources of calories, so rather than adding nuts to your current diet, substitute them for less healthful foods such as bread or red meats.

The method know as 3d ultrasound scanning is that can be used when a woman is in early pregnancy, it can provide 3d pictures of the unborn child. Most times these pictures are rapidly captured and combined to created a 4d scan.

Three dimensional scanning works in the same manner to the normal ultrasound scanning methods except that the ultrasound scanning waves are sent from many directions. The ultrasound pulses can be reflected back and captured and provide information to construct a 3d picture in in the same way as 3d pictures. 3 dimesional ultasound scanning was devised by olaf ramm abs stephen smith.

It is important to understand that sonologists all over the world always pictured 3d images of anatomy or pathology in their minds whilst doing 2d scans. However, until recently it was impossible to do this type of reconstruction on on info using ultrasound. With the introduction of baby scans for the first time allowed us a view into the brain of a sonologist and hence letting us see the images on the ultrasound machine.

The 3d/4d ultrasound image should utilize ultrasound energy following the same limits as conventional 2d ultrasound to create the 3d images. While there is no information of harm due to 3d ultrasound, its use in non-medical situations should be undertaken with an understanding of the risks that exist.

Please also remember to collect your unborn babies stems cells by involving a company like babycells.
